I was lucky enough to coach Andrew for the Special Olympics swim team in Rockwall. He loved swimming and gave it his all. He always liked watching the “big guys” do their fancy strokes and really wanted to learn them. We were attending an area meet and he was about to take to the pool and swim a 25 meter Freestyle (Hope I’m remembering the right distance). The start buzzer sounded and Andrew took off doing the breaststroke! He didn’t “know” the stroke but off he goes. I look back at Stacy like “what is he doing?” She was frantic. He could be disqualified if he didnt do the breaststroke correctly or if he changed back to another stroke. We looked on in complete shock as we watched him swim the whole race with a correct breaststroke! Then to our utter amazement he got GOLD! Just goes to show us how determined he was and how to never underestimate his abilities when he sets his mind to something. His smile, twinkle in his eye and shear confidence made us jump for joy. always a delight!!
